Abstract:
Earthquakes heavily alter the man-earth relationship between residents and their living environment in shock-stricken regions of China, and the issue of place attachment to pre-disaster locale for them in post-shock reconstruction regions had received extensive attentions from home and abroad. However, cognitive debate or contractionary arguments about place attachment of inhabitants to pre-disaster locale regarding relocation willingness had not yet received in-depth academic discussion and practical validation.
In this study, it surveyed residents in counties such as Beichuan, Hanwang, and Yingxiu, which are part of the post-2008 Wenchuan Earthquake reconstruction regions, by a convenience sampling method. It hypothesized the willingness of the residents to relocate, and then introduced a quantitative evaluation of three dimensions of place attachment to general, social, and physical environment, aiming to reveal the dimensions and differential characteristics of the place attachment towards house, neighborhood, and city/town/county.
(1)The surveyed residents generally exhibited relatively strong inclination of place attachment towards their residential settings.
(2)Social attachment to the house was significantly stronger than general attachment and physical attachment if under the same scale.
(3)There were significant inter-group differences in physical attachment to house and general/physical attachment to city/town/county.
The findings were established on a local scale and the emotional connection between the self and others was elaborated, providing empirical support for a deeper understanding of the formation mechanism of place attachment in post-disaster reconstruction areas. And it can serve as a reference for reducing xenophobia and promoting the construction of livable environments in post-disaster reconstruction communities on various scales and types.
